Teacher Externships

Allied is a global provider of steel buildings and structures. It has a team of approximately 300 team members working in the areas of sales, business development, estimating, project management, logistics, production, engineering and design, field services, accounting, HR, facilities and technology. Allied has major campuses in Spain, Colombia, Panama, Florida and Texas.

Externs have the opportunity to have firsthand exposure to the various functions of a locally present global company. Through attendance of meetings, work sessions and one on one engagements, externs should see how Allied utilizes core skills such as clarity communication, problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration that could be communicated to the students they teach.

Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest is a 260 bed full-service, fully- accredited not-for-profit hospital serving the residents of McLennan County and the surrounding Central Texas Region.

The teacher extern will observe classroom teaching and engagement strategies for our nurse resident cohort.

During the externship, the teacher will primarily participate in a structured job shadowing experience across several core functions to gain a comprehensive understanding of our day-to-day operation. The extern will observe and learn about Food Safety and Quality Regulatory, Production Operations, Environmental Health and Safety practices, Warehouse and Material Flow processes, Transportation and Logistics, Reliability and Maintenance, and Continuous Improvement initiatives. This exposure is designed to provide real-world insight into how these functions collaborate to support safe, efficient, and high-quality food manufacturing.

Our employees have backgrounds in different areas - from business to finance to accounting and everything in between. Central National Bank loves being involved in the Central Texas community and encourages employees to serve on boards and volunteer as they are able.

Teacher externs will go on a tour of our Waco locations. You will get to spend time with employees from different areas of the bank. You will learn how banks make money and learn about the lending and deposit sides of banking. We would also like to learn from our teachers as well. You will get to meet with our marketing team and provide your insight on what is important to our younger customers. We also want to know how we can be a resource to you and your students. We would like to get your thoughts on how to make financial literacy more accessible.

Central Texas Iron Works (CTIW) is a prominent industrial structural steel fabricator located in Waco, Texas, established in 1910. It is one of North America's largest and most respected steel fabricators, specializing in producing structural steel for various industries, including mining, petrochemical, and power. CTIW employs approximately 20+ people and has the capability of producing up to 4,000 tons per month. The company is known for its quality assurance programs and has a strong reputation in the industry.

The teacher extern will spend one day in the office and one day on the floor, learning about operations.

During this externship, educators will spend time shadowing multiple departments within our senior living community, including life enrichment, memory care, dining services, nursing, administration, and operations. The goal is to provide a firsthand understanding of the diverse career paths available in senior living. Teachers will observe daily responsibilities, interact with staff and residents, and learn about the skills and training required for various roles.

Emerald Transformer, a leading provider of electrical equipment solutions, recently inaugurated a new transformer facility in Waco, Texas. The facility opened in April 2023 and is set to enhance the company's production capacity and service offerings in the Texas market. The facility will provide services such as transformer refurbishment, decommissioning, recycling, and oil lab testing, contributing to the local economy and supporting the Texas electrical infrastructure.

Teacher externs will have a choice to shadow the Office Manager, Operations Manager, Logistics Manager, or Supervision.

Friends for Life is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps seniors and people with disabilities live their best lives as independently as possible.

Teacher externs can be placed at the Tool Shed Thrift Store to learn how we sell donated tools to raise money. They will also observe in one or two of our other program areas to learn the skills necessary to do those jobs, requirements for each part of our work, operations, and what we are looking for in new employees.

Teacher externs for Haley & Olson will walk verbally through the setup and history of the firm and get to observe a day in the life of a paralegal or associate (or both with us). We can also offer the extern experience in internal accounting and operations to learn about working internally as an accountant and operational support in the legal industry.

The extern will primarily work with our Marketing/PR department. We will focus on the extern assisting with a targeted campaign project that uses both organic and paid methods across multiple marketing channels. The extern will learn how marketing must constantly communicate how our retail stores fuel our education and training programs, which is a unique challenge for a social enterprise organization like Goodwill.

Teacher externs will begin with the Land Surveying portion of future development of properties, which will involve a field trip out to a property to see and understand land surveying technology, the collection of data, and how that goes to future civil engineering development

We are a mid-sized commercial general contractor. Our top clients are Baylor University and the Catholic Church. We are different from other general contractors in the Waco area because we have 3 in-house Architects on staff. So we are the only in-house Design-Build contractor in this part of Texas.

The teacher will shadow different employees (Project Managers, Estimators, Field Superintendents, Architects, etc). The extern will be placed in our main office and will most likely spend 60% of the time in the office and the other 40% touring local job sites.

KWTX-TV News 10 is the dominant television station for the Waco-Temple-Killeen market in the Heart of Central Texas. The CBS, CW, Telemundo, and MeTV affiliate, KWTX, is the leader in every local newscast. Two storm-chasing vehicles, the Weather Edge and Weather Explorer, give our crews mobile weather labs to track severe weather. Community service is ingrained in the culture of KWTX. We take pride in being able to say that no other station does it better.

Our teacher extern will have the opportunity to spend time with our Creative Services, Community Services, News, and Sales teams.

While at our agency, teacher externs will shadow staff in their day-to-day functions to see the dynamic approach we take to provide quality services to the Courts, clients, and community.

McLennan County Adult Probation

Pet Circle Regional Animal Center is a dedicated facility committed to protecting and improving the lives of animals in our community. Serving the greater Waco region, the center provides shelter, medical care, adoption services, and lost-and-found support for pets in need. Pet Circle works to promote responsible pet ownership through education, vaccination programs, and spay/neuter initiatives. With a focus on compassion and community partnership, the center helps connect animals with loving homes while ensuring safe, humane care for every animal that comes through its doors.

During the externship, the teacher will observe and participate in daily shelter operations to gain firsthand experience in animal services. Activities will include ride-alongs with Animal Protection Officers to learn about field response, animal welfare enforcement, and community outreach. The teacher will also assist with front desk support, customer service, and intake processes, including basic paperwork and observing animal assessments. This externship provides insight into shelter operations, public service responsibilities, and the collaborative work involved in protecting animals and supporting the community.

The Waco, Texas, facility supports regional and national operations by managing inventory, coordinating shipments, and ensuring efficient product movement through the supply chain. As part of a worldwide logistics network, the site helps businesses improve delivery efficiency, reduce costs, and maintain reliable distribution through advanced logistics technology and operational expertise.

The teacher extern will learn how real-world supply chains operate, including warehousing, inventory management, shipping, and logistics coordination. They would gain insight into teamwork, workplace communication, and how technology is used to track and move products efficiently. Observing daily operations will help them understand the importance of organization, problem-solving, safety procedures, and time management. These experiences can help teachers better explain to students how logistics careers work and how classroom skills such as math, planning, and communication apply in a professional work environment.
