For over 30 years, the Greater Waco Chamber has hosted luncheons to excite the community for upcoming sports seasons. Held annually in August, the Kick Off Sports Luncheon celebrates the start of football season.
About the Kick Off Luncheon
Each year during the luncheon, attendees hear a preview from Baylor University coaches, a look at the upcoming high school football season and a special guest speaker.
Prior speakers have included Ed "Too Tall" Jones (former Dallas Cowboy defensive end), Dat Nguyen, (former Dallas Cowboy linebacker and member of the Texas A&M Wrecking Crew), Gary Baxter (former American football cornerback and Baylor football player), Charles Davis (an American football analyst on Foxsports.com and former player), Bill Hancock (first executive director of the BCS), Bobby Bowden, Charlie Ward, Trey Wingo (ESPN), Brad Sham (voice of the Dallas Cowboys), R. C. Slocum (former Texas A&M Head Coach), Gene Stallings (former A&M and Alabama Coach) and Grant Teaff (former Baylor University Coach).

Bryce Petty (2010-14)
Bryce Petty is the only quarterback in Baylor history to lead the Bears to back-to-back conference championships, securing Big 12 titles in 2013 and 2014. He was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and first team All-Big 12 in 2013, and earned second team honors in 2014. Drafted in the fourth round by the New York Jets, Bryce played three years in the NFL with the Jets and the Dolphins.

Cody Carlson (1983-86)
A standout quarterback from Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio, Cody Carlson had a record-setting career at Baylor before spending eight years in the NFL with the Houston Oilers. In 1986, he led the SWC in total offense and was named to the All-SWC team in both 1984 and 1986. Cody was inducted into the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.

Don Trull (1959-63)
A first team All-American who finished fourth in the 1963 Heisman Trophy balloting, Don Trull twice led the nation in passing and threw for more than 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns during his hall of fame Baylor career. Also an excellent student, Trull was Baylor’s first NFF National Scholar Athlete who also played six seasons in the AFL & NFL. He was inducted into the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975, The College Football Hall of Fame in 2013, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

Jay Jeffrey (1980-81)
After transferring from Missouri, Jay Jeffrey quickly ascended the Baylor quarterback ranks, ultimately leading the Bears to a school-record 10 wins and the 1980 Southwest Conference Championship. His stellar performance earned him first team All-SWC honors in 1980. Jay was inducted into the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009 and the SWC Hall of Fame in 2025.

The Dave Campbell Award is presented annually at the Kick Off Luncheon to recognize someone who has made a significant impact on football in McLennan County.
